Morpholio Trace is excited to feature the captivating drawings of Danish Architect, Peter Ravnborg. Peter finds his way into new universes through the sketching process. Morpholio Trace has allowed his fountain pen drawings to find even great life and depth through the addition of digital pen strokes and shading. Learn how to seamlessly blend analog and digital sketches to create insane drawings like Peter’s below.

Step 1

Take a photo of your analog sketch and create a Stencil out of it using the Custom Stencil feature in Trace. Use the Rapidograph Brush to fill the Stencil.

Step 2

Use Layer Settings to change the Paper Color to black. Then lighten the Paper Opacity to create a cool gray background.

Step 3

Use the Water Color and Charcoal Brush to add highlights and texture to the drawing. These touches make the drawing pop against the background.

Step 4

Here’s the fun part! Using the Pencil and Pen Brushes, test out different details the bring the drawing to life! Using Layers, you can turn these off and on to see what feels right and makes the drawing the best it can be.

Step 5

Smile! You’ve just made an amazing hand drawing even more incredible by using the power of digital ink.

Here’s some more from Peter:

“I graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Architecture in early 2016. Since my graduation I have worked as an Architect I Copenhagen. I have drawn sporadically all my life. In the academy I held a pen in my hand every single day and it soon became one of my favourite tools. The analog media isn’t what it used to be and a great deal of young architects in the professional field are not able to communicate properly through sketching. The hand drawn sketch has many potentials and is in my opinion a communication tool we can’t work without.

Over the last couple of years I have developed a universe that is setting for my structure. The structures are grown from my subconscious and almost always relate to challenges or problems in our build world. Some are planned and some evolves under the sketching process. Some are abstract and some more relatable in scale. But they are all from the same world.

The elevations and sections of the strange structures are mostly done with fountain pen and ink. Sometimes the ink is done on top of a pencil drawing.

Morpholio allows me to take my rough ink drawing and process and detail it without loosing the ability to change the composition. My works deals a lot with composition and proportion. Sometimes a tiny flagpole or water tower on my structures can make the difference between good or bad. Testing detailing in Morpholio is something that makes the process more flexible and the result better.

I have been working a lot with stencils. My black ink makes a perfect stencil and makes it easy to paint part of the sketch again or even as a mask for highlights.

I have also found that I can make my crosshatching from Morpholio merge almost perfect with my ink. That’s a very important discovery that makes the transition between analog and digital much smoother and makes Morpholio a valid tool for my work.”
